House We Like - Passive House Retreat, New England (Part II)

Posted on Tue, Sep 25, 2012

Last week, our blog featured a Passive House Retreat with an innovative design approach to modern comfort living and aesthetics. The house is also highly energy efficiency as we will see in the energy profile below.

The Passive House Retreat provides a strong argument for efficiency. Measuring actual consumption over the past year, the home uses 86% less energy than if the same home was built only to minimum code energy requirements.

The details are in the building envelope, which uses more insulation, high performance windows, no thermal bridging, and exceptional air sealing. A single air source heat pump provides the heating and cooling for the house, while a heat pump hot water heater offers domestic hot water. A small 4.1kW solar electric system would generate enough energy annually to offset all consumption.
